About Johnny McCoy
As a 1977 graduate of The Garland High School, Johnny McCoy led the track and field team to state in the 440 relay. He went on to achieve All-American honors in track and field at Ranger Junior College, which paved the way for his time at Rice University from 1981-1982. In 1982, Johnny signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for pro football and continued his professional athletic career with the Michigan Panthers in the USFL in 1983.
Johnny's athletic achievements brought him back to Garland ISD in 1989, where he began as an assistant coach for the girls' track and field team. He eventually took the helm as head coach of the boys' track and field team in 2003, guiding his teams to state championships in 7 out of his 10 years as head coach. His dedication to education and coaching earned him the prestigious Who’s Who Among American Teachers award in 1996, 1998, and 2002. Additionally, he coached girls' volleyball from 1994-2000, leading the freshman girls to a District Championship in 1998.
In 2008, Coach McCoy was inducted into the Garland Hall of Fame, and in 2019, he received the Garland Legends Award. As he enters his 35th year at The Garland High School, Johnny McCoy's legacy as a coach, educator, and mentor continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.
